What This Means for Businesses?

In 2024, the eIDAS 2.0 and European Digital Identity Framework (EUDI) officially entered into force. It defines how citizens and businesses across the EU can securely receive, store, and share verified data in a standardized way. By the end of 2026, every member state must offer at least one EU Digital Identity Wallet (EUDIW).

Beyond citizen-focused wallets, the European Commission has also announced plans and a framework for European Business Wallets. Public administrations will be required to adopt them within two years, while businesses will be given additional time for implementation. According to Commission estimates, these wallets could unlock over EUR 160 billion in annual savings for businesses!

In simple terms: physical documents become digital, and users gain full control over who can access their data as they have their documents in their digital wallets on mobile phones. The ecosystem is built around a trust triangle:

• Issuers (governments, universities, businesses) who issue digital documents
• Users (citizens, employees, customers) who receive and share digital documents
• Verifiers (businesses and institutions needing to check authenticity) who receive and verify digital documents
